This is how much it costs to travel in Ghana

In this post, I’ll give you a breakdown of how much it costs to travel in Ghana on a budget trip for 1 person. This cost breakdown is based on my experience and is only applicable for travel from Lagos to Accra and all prices and exchange rates are accurate as of the time of travel (March 2022).

Costs to Ghana: Flights from Lagos to Accra

I booked a flight from Lagos to Accra through Africa World Airlines (They were the most affordable and had very good reviews) for N163,000 ($280), this cost can either be higher or lower depending on your flight times. Flights during the day tend to cost more while early morning and late-night flights cost less.

*Note: the plane is quite small

*Tip: Don’t book your flights from third-party sites, always book directly from the airline. With travel requirements constantly changing, it’ll be easier to make changes to your booking from the airline itself.

Costs to Ghana: Covid Tests

I spent $186 on COVID tests in total.

*At the time of travel, covid tests were a travel requirement, but have since been removed (in both Ghana and Nigeria) as a requirement (if you are fully vaccinated). I am adding it to this cost breakdown as it contributed to my costs, but when you plan your trip remove the cost of covid tests.

Costs to Ghana: Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is something you need and should never travel without; anything can happen while on a trip and you must be covered for any type of unforeseen situation. When buying travel insurance, make sure to get one that covers Covid – 19 costs. I used Allianz Travel Insurance and paid N2,845 for 5 days. Another travel Insurance I would recommend and have personally used is Safety Wing which you can get for as low as $12.

It is travel medical insurance that was created by nomads for nomads. You can buy a policy for the duration of your trip and end it when you want, it is extremely flexible. Check out their website and get travel insurance for your next trip!

Getting around in Ghana: Transportation Costs

I used Uber and Bolt to get around Accra and hired a car with a driver for 2 days for trips outside Accra and spent a total of $193. The private car hire was where the bulk of my transportation costs came from, for 1 day I paid 400 cedis ($49) and an additional 300 cedis ($37) for petrol. So, for both days, the private car hire cost me $86.

I could have easily used public transportation or Uber for the trips outside Accra, but this wasn’t an option for me as I was paying for convenience.

Costs to go to Ghana: Accommodation Costs

I spent 4 nights at Somewhere Nice Hostel in Accra. It is 15 minutes away from Kotoka International Airport and at the centre of Accra. I booked it on booking.com but it can also be booked on Hostel World. For 4 nights in a 7-bed female dorm, I spent $89. I paid at the property and ended up paying less than budgeted because I paid in cedis and not in dollars.

Feeding & Activities Costs

My total tab for food came up to $52 for 5 days. I ordered “take out” most of the time and my accommodation offered free breakfast. As for activities, I spent $104 and $80 of it went to an Accra City Tour with Cytravel Consult. Other activities I did were quite affordable.

ActivityCost
Abseiling150 cedis ($22)
Shai Hills Resource Reserve70 cedis ($9)
Asenema Falls10 cedis ($1.50) entry fee
Aburi Botanical Gardens10 cedis ($1.50) entry fee, 20 cedis ($2) guide fee

Other Costs

I spent $50 on souvenirs (I don’t know how I spent this much ?) and $10 on miscellaneous items (water & snacks).

Finally, here is the summarised breakdown of my trip. Again, these costs are based solely on my experience and to help you in your planning process. These costs are accurate as of the time of travel (March 2022).
